The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is the ONLY nonprofit organization whose sole focus is helping those affected by obesity. Since 2005, the OAC has grown into a 16,000 member-strong organization dedicated to educating and advocating on behalf of those affected every day. Throughout the years, the OAC has tackled a wide variety of issues from improving access to obesity treatments to combating stigma and discrimination. Some of the OAC’s accomplishments include:
- Two personal invitations to the White House to address obesity and childhood obesity
- Successfully removed an offensive billboard by PETA that unfairly targeted the obese
- Co-Hosted the largest public National awareness event in Washington, DC: the Walk from Obesity – Walk on the Capitol
- Successfully removed a discriminatory IQ testing requirement from a large insurer for those seeking weight-loss surgery
- Recently launched a public National weight and health awareness campaign – Your Weight Matters, located at www.yourweightmatters.org

On Friday, April 23rd Dr. Robin Blackstone, Medical Director of the Scottsdale Healthcare Bariatric Center, Secretary/Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the ASMBS, Co-Chair of the ASMBS Access Committee, and Founding Member of the Obesity Action Coalition, led an important discussion about the current state of our health care system in relation to access to care for the treatment of obesity. Dr Blackstone is not only an extraordinary physician and surgeon, but also a passionate advocate, and this presentation should inspire all health care professionals to learn more about how they can help all those in need gain access to safe, effective treatment for obesity.
